This has also provided me with an incredible education in business, one where I have been lucky enough to be a part of some amazing successes and learn some valuable lessons from some failures. More importantly, it has been one that has taught me first-hand what it takes to establish, develop, and grow a business successfully. Below are some details of the businesses I have worked for and what I achieved working in those places:
- First Choice Stationers: My first experience working at a business happened when I joined my family’s stationery and newsagents business in North West London in late 2004. When I joined, the business was going through a rough patch. The opening of out-of-town shopping centres and the rising popularity of e-commerce led to a decline in footfall. It needed a spark, and I was going to provide it. So, we got to work removing underperforming product lines, adding new and exciting ones, including fashion stationery and educational toys, enhancing the in-store experience, and improving our customer service. We even opened a store on the then-emerging e-commerce platform eBay. This led to increased sales as word-of-mouth spread among the local community, and the change in product helped boost profits by 20%.
- Swirliz: In 2009, I worked in a dessert parlour and ice cream wholesaler. When the business opened, sales were incredibly high, well above what we were expecting, but soon started to decline to a point where, if something wasn’t done quickly, it was likely to go out of business. We reduced costs wherever we could, streamlined the menu to offer fewer products. This made the menu more profitable and much easier to understand for the customer. We also marketed the business locally via leafleting and expanded our presence on social media, which were key drivers to attract new customers. We also expanded in-home delivery, utilizing platforms such as Just Eat and direct ordering. Added catering packs for large gatherings, and began to wholesale our ice cream. After a period of eight months, we were able to turn the fortune of the business around.
- Mail Boxes Etc.: Initially, I was interested in being a franchisee, but after investigating the business further, I found many things that I thought could be improved. I sent a letter to the chairman highlighting my concerns. He and the board were so impressed that, instead of being a franchisee, they offered me a position in business development. During my time there, I was responsible for finding ways to protect key revenue streams and identify new ones. This was no easy task, as two of our most important services, shipping and printing, were hit with heavy online competition. Still, I identified ways for us to be more price-competitive while keeping good margins and providing value to our customers. I helped add several new revenue streams to the business, including data destruction, corporate gifts, and collection items from auction houses. As well as revamping current services such as shipping, printing, mailbox rental, and stationery retail. Much of which the business still uses today.
- KZ and Co Accountants: This is where I really learned to cut my teeth in providing advice and feedback services to businesses. While working there, I offered business advice and development services to their clients. These clients were small and medium businesses based in London and the South East. They included food and beverage manufacturers, health & beauty brands, toy companies, pet care brands, retailers, personal service providers, and restaurants. My work included research, feedback, and suggestions that helped with business development, growth, strategy development, and planning. Which helped them boost their sales, increase brand awareness, and their online presence.
